It is advisable to have an electrical inspection at least once a year, if not more frequently for older homes. However, many of us only think about our electrical system when something goes awry. Fall is an ideal time to schedule an inspection, as you are preparing for colder weather and it is better to discover any issues with your system before they cause problems.

Energy Bills Are Running High

If you see a sudden increase in your energy bill after turning off your air conditioner and turning on your heating, it’s a good idea to have an electrical inspection. Not only will they find out what’s causing your bill to go up, but the inspector can also find ways to save even more energy. There could be more than one problem with your electrical system.

You Have An Older Home

Older homes have contrasting electrical requirements when compared to newer residences. If you have recently acquired an older home, it is essential to have an electrical inspection. Undocumented damages, needed repairs, and outdated wires are only a few of the many potential dangers.

Not only can these issues inflate your energy bill, but they can also pose a serious fire hazard. It is not uncommon for prior occupants to attempt repairs that are now ineffective, and there could be a considerable amount of deterioration.

Hot Sockets

If your sockets or light switch panels are hot or they give you a shock, that is a great reason to have an electrical inspection. You should have the inspection right away.

If the surface of the appliance becomes hot, try it in a different socket. It may be the appliance, but it could also be a problem with your wiring.

Flickering Lights

When your lights flicker or go dim, this may be indicative of poor wiring. Alternatively, it could mean that another appliance is using all the power from that particular socket.

You could try plugging the other appliance into a different socket, but you should still look into getting your electrical system inspected. There may be a short circuit somewhere.

Tripping Circuit Breakers

Your circuit breakers shut off when there is an excessive demand placed on them–that is their purpose. However, if they trip frequently or when you believe they shouldn’t, that is a strong indication that you should have an electrical inspection.

If this occurs with a particular socket, it’s likely that there is an issue with the wiring. There may be damage of some sort or the wires may need to be replaced.

Hot Smells

If you detect a foul smell coming from your appliance or the socket, discontinue use of it immediately. The smell should be recognizable as a sign of a problem.

A new appliance may have a certain smell the first time you use it, but that should not last. If you detect this same smell on a regular appliance, call for an inspection.
